Railings and Stairs - Usability Study - FIX THE BASICS

Over at Revit OpED Steve Stafford has posted that the Autodesk User Experience team is looking for Architects, Drafters, Designers and CAD Managers who use Revit Architecture or other products to design stairs or railings, to participate in a usability study of some Autodesk software concepts.

These sessions are approximately 90 minutes long.

To get selected you must need to complete a short questionnaire, and select all dates and times that you would be available for a 90 minute time slot on dates between May 16th and May 27th ranging from 8:00a.m. - 4:30 p.m. EST

Participants who are a good match for our study will be contacted within a few days.Your involvement helps make Autodesk products better..........Always true but lets hope that this time they actually do something about it and FIX THE BASICS.

I recall submitting information to Revit Factory regarding stairs in the long distant past

Stairs by Numbers on the 26th July 2010

Name That (Railing) Object on the 2nd April 2010

Now it has to be said the Stairs Team obviously aren't the quicket team around because they were asking questions a year ago and bugger all happened in Revit 2012 regarding stairs and railings that have need to be fixed for some time

So the Question is are they going to FIX THE BASICS in Revit 2013?

Plugin of the Month from the Autodesk Developer Network

.
Good old Steve Stafford's and his Revit OpEd Blog ~ I now know there is a Plugin of the Month resource.

Steve says "Poking at them, it should have been rolled into 2012 but I'm grateful that it exists and freely so. Check out the Autodesk Labs blog post."

This is a little like the Excitech Revit Toolkit - Coordinate Scheduling that will be three years old, once they get around to updating it to 2012. I'm very thankful to excitech for creating their toolkit, the point is they really should not have too.

As Steve rightly says the above and this includes the excitech toolkit, by now they should have been rolled into Revit already.

Hence the label on this post to Fix_the_Basics .........

Autodesk we do hope you are taking note! or perhaps change the site name to Plugin of the YEAR!

Printer & Plotter BUGS with Revit 2012

Computers and Bugs have always gone together, I have written a number of computer programs in various languages and one of the things I love is trying to solve code problems and sort out Bugs. My final year project for my degree in civil engineering was a suite of surveying programs called SUE (Surveying Utilities Ensemble) written in Turbo Basic ....yep that’s pre windows visual basic.

I’ve always found it very satisfying to get these little buggers resolved (see what I did there Mum!)

These days I don’t need to write complicated spreadsheets, databases of code, accounts packages but I still like to find bugs and assist in the eradication, that’s why I like to Beta test programs.

I also think that software companies should be very open about bugs in their software and getting as much help as they can to help resolve them.

My current little bugger is that in AutoCAD and Revit Structure 2012 when printing to the KIP 3000 if you press the properties button to the right of the printer name you get an Unhandled Exception Error and the program crashes and bombs out.

Exception handling allows developers to detect errors easily without writing special code to test return values. Even better, it lets them keep exception-handling code cleanly separated from the exception-generating code. It also lets them use the same exception-handling code to deal with a range of possible exceptions. So, it is always a good idea to handle exceptions rather than leave them unhandled.

So when Revit Structure 2012 crashes in a spectacular way it invokes a reporting system that allows you to send information to Autodesk so that they can investigate.

Now if you complete you email address and they have seen this before they have a system that sends you a suggestion on how to fix the problem. If it’s a new problem or one they have not solved yet then you get one of these back:-

Which is basically “Thanks, our products aren’t crap, and thanks for letting us know you have found a new bug that we missed during beta because we can’t test every bit of equipment and set up on the planet. And when we actually figure out what’s happened and have found a fix or possible fix we will let you know."

Now you either leave it there, or you officially submit a request for help via support.

Then you get a nice email saying

"Dear Alan James Wooldridge,

Thank you for contacting Autodesk Support. Here is the recommended resolution to your case:

As the crash happens after pressing the properties button, it seems to indicate an issue with the plotter driver. The dialog box accessed when pressing this button belongs to the driver interface.

Please download and install the latest driver and firmware for your precise device, from your printer's manufacturer website.

Please let us know the outcome.
Best regards,

Name Supplied
Autodesk Support Team"

Now you have already told them when you submit the help request that the driver is the latest driver and that you have done the same in Revit and AutoCAD 2011 and they don’t crash, but they don’t seem to have taken that on board.

This is what is called the” Indian Support Centre Syndrome”

The "don’t we look good" if we respond to you really quick with a reply that might work and if that does not then someone who actually knowns or has half a clue has given us a tick list to work you down, until we find a solution or you get fed up keep coming back to the call centre.

The blame the operating system or someone/thing else is another good wiz As in “As the crash happens after pressing the properties button, it seems to indicate an issue with the plotter driver. The dialog box accessed when pressing this button belongs to the driver interface.

However the fact is that Revit and AutoCAD 2012 should not crash if you press the properties button when printing, and that release 2011 works fine escapes them. Also If you did not need to do this then the button would not be there in the first place!.

A quick round robin email to LRUG London Revit User Group members has resulted in establishing that at least one other member is also having printing problems with Revit Architecture 2012

"All our HP printers don’t batch plot correctly from RAC2012. You get text boxes around all text. If you print singular sheets all is well."

I asked if they had made a formal support request they did and the Autodesk solution to that one is

“Yeah I did a support request but they pushed it back to us saying that we need to rollback our HP drivers from what is the latest version. The problem is we can’t do that as it would have a knock-on effect to other internal softwares that need the upgrade of the driver.(ie office2010, etc..)”

Autodesk must have picked up on the fact that they already had the latest version, thus it's the blame the printer driver but get them to try an older version. Same trick different direction ;0)

That’s when you have to find a work around

So for now from revit 2012 we batch plot to our Xerox machines for A4/A3 size and then the OCE machines for the larger scales.”

With regards to our problem, yes short term I can do everything outside Revit using Control Panel, but if I forget and press that bloody properties button it’s CRASH CITY!

The reason I know that we have the latest driver is that we have just had to pay to get it because it supports plotting adobe pdf that the last driver didn't

I have offered to try anything and send any files Autodesk might need but this is their problem, not a driver problem, an operating system problem or a network problem.

There is something different between 2011 and 2012 and it is supposed to be improvements not more bugs to contend with. Now this is why a lot of people still wait for Service Pack 1, and for idiots like me that want to get on and roll out new (and better?) software to find these things and get Autodesk to resolve them.

I will keep you all posted with developments as they happen, If you are also experiencing problems or have a KIP 3000 and you can press the properties button without Revit crash and burning please let me know.

Another little up-cock from Autodesk - UK Shortcut Icons

.
So, Autodesk missed out some of the metric templates from the UK library then publish that the way to get the missing files which are standard metric files is that they can be obtained by downloading the US Metric content. Ummmm US and Metric

DoH!

The latest blunder is more easily fixed ........

When you install AutoCAD Structural Detailing you should get two shortcuts, one to just AutoCAD 2012 and the other to AutoCAD Structural Detailing 2012.

The one for Stuctural Detailing has a SD in the corner, Ummm they both have an SD in the corner!

The AutoCAD 2012 Icon is there, you just have to go to properties and change the icon......It's in the program directory.

The 2012 Analytical Model and Upgraded Files: Analytical Surfaces for Walls, Floors, and Foundation Slabs

.
This is a repost from Revit Clinic on the 12th April 2012 click here for the original posting

There are so many good posts this time of year that you end up thinking I saw something about that but where? Repeating or linking here on my blog is the easiest way for me to re-find these post again..... now you all thought I just did this for you and because I'm sad!

Revit Structure 2012 introduces Analytical Surfaces for Walls, Floors, and Foundation Slabs:

AS_01
In a file that has been upgraded from a previous version of Revit, your surfaces will look like this:

AS_02
To adjust these, you can do the following:
  1. Open up the default 2012 template file, located at: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RST 2012\Templates\US Imperial\Structural Analysis-default.rte.
  2. Set your upgraded file as the active model, and go to Manage > Transfer Project Standards.
  3. Select the template project in the Copy from pulldown.

From here you have a couple of options. You can select Materials and Object Styles from the template project to transfer to your upgraded file. With Materials, if you do not want to overwrite existing materials in the project, you can select New Only. With Object Styles you will have to choose Overwrite. If that is okay, then check both boxes, transfer them to your upgraded file, and disregard Steps 4-10.

If you don't want to Overwrite Object Styles, then choose only Materials, and continue on to Steps 4-10.
  4. With your upgraded project current, go to Manage > Object Styles, and switch to the Analytical Model Objects tab.
  5. In the Analytical Floors row, click the '...' box in the Materials column.
  6. Select the Analytical Floor Surface material. Adjust the Line Color to RGB 128-064-000.
  7. In the Analytical Foundation Slabs row, click the '...' box in the Materials column.
  8. Select the Analytical Slab Surface material. Adjust the Line Color to RGB 155-187-089.
  9. In the Analytical Walls row, click the '...' box in the Materials column.
  10. Select the Analytical Wall Surface material. Adjust the Line Color to RGB 000-200-200.

Upgrades and Migration of data and settings from Revit 2011 to 2012.

.
Tips tricks and best practices of upgrade and migration of data and settings from Revit 2011 to 2012.

Things to consider before upgrading or moving to a new version or Revit

  • Project Depth – How far along are you?
  • Project Priority – How Important is loss of time
  • REMEMBER - THERE IS NO GOING BACK or Save as function in Revit
  • Do you meet the resource requirements
    • Training – are you up to speed
    • Technology – Can your computer run the new version

New Version Template

Should you upgrade your template or rebuild your template, here are reasons for both:-

Why Upgrade a existing template?
  • Faster ~ but not all new features may be supported
Why should you build a new template?
  • Fresh
  • New Features will be included
  • Clean up and Optimise ~ spring cleaning
  • Prevent errors by template corruption
Autodesk Product Support recommends starting with a new fresh template with each version of the product.

We are in the process of rebuilding our template at the moment and are documenting it as we go for guidance and a reminder for next year and to share with other \ new Revit users. I will post it here on the blog once completed.

Upgrading families from 2011 to 2012 format using the Content Batch Upgrade Utility Tool

This is available after you have downloaded installed and extracted the installer for Revit 2012. A folder under the root C:\ is created called Autodesk\Autodesk_Revit_Structure_2012_English_Win32-64bit

The files you are after are in the ContentBatchUtility folder. Here are the instructions contained in the readme.txt file

To Use the Content Batch Upgrade Utility:

1. Copy Upgrade_RFA.txt and Upgrade_RFA.bat into the root directory of the library that you want to upgrade.
2. Run the Upgrade_RFA.bat to create the file list to upgrade, famlist_rfa.txt.
3. To launch the utility, from the library directory, drag Upgrade_RFA.txt onto the Revit icon on your desktop.
4. After upgrading, delete all backup files from the library.

Notes:

Make sure all of your .rfa files are not read-only and delete all backup files from the library.
If a particular family fails to upgrade properly, the utility will stop.
If this occurs, open famlist_rfa.txt in Microsoft Notepad, and remove all previously upgraded families and the failed family from the list.
Save famlist_rfa.txt, and re-run the utility.

Problems with Content for Revit 2012 Products

.
Harlan Brumm over at Revit Clinic has written that

“It is important to know that some content may still be downloaded from the internet (depends on if you are downloading Revit or installing from media), so it is a good idea to install Revit with a active internet connection. With 2012, you will not see the download occuring though (no content loader), it is transparent and happens behind the scenes. Your installation may take more time depending on how much content needs to be downloaded as part of the installation.”

I installed a copy at home to harvest the content library to install on the server at work because we have network copies.

The Installing indicator at the top stopped and I was stuck at "5 of 12 remaining" for such a long time that I did begin to think that the install had crashed, so be warned think Take That and "have a little patience"

At work we obtained the new network licence from excitech via email in about 12 minutes which was good going chaps, thank you much better than our last reseller.

We are installing two copies so that we can migrate our families from 2011 to 2012 format and rebuild our template before rolling out 2012 to all at our three offices.

So at work I ran the downloaded exe which unpacks the Revit Structure 2012 onto the hard disk and then starts the install routine which took about 8 minutes.

I turned off all the content because I don’t need it on the hard disk, as we all point to the server for our library. The whole install took an hour, and again a screen like the one above stuck at 5 of 8 (I assumed a lower number because no families and I had Design Review 2012 already installed on the PC at work)

When the message to reboot finally appeared and I looked at the hard disk it had installed the UK library on the hard disk although I had turned it off. So be warned, it appears that it still goes and harvest in the background.

In addition Harlan Brumm over at Revit Clinic has also posted about the relocation of certain files, he missed that the library has a new home.

Formally in 2011 the Metric Library was found under:- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Autodesk\ RST 2011\Metric Library

In 2012 for some reason It is now to be found under:- C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RST 2012\Libraries\UK

There is no explanation as to why they have done this?

It would appear that during the change in name from Metric to UK they have also dropped all of the European Specific Folders from Profiles, Columns and Framing etc. Which is kind of weird, since the last of the Eurocodes are just getting their national annexes published after many years, and just starting to be used?

Again no explanation as to why this has been done?

For some reason they have deleted the Corus Advance folder and its contents that was found under G10 – Structural Steel Framing \ Steel Sections

Autodesk have traditionally have been very poor at documenting what exactly should be or is in and out of the library.

Each folder should have a readme.txt file that provides information on:-

The amount of files there should be in the folder
What files have been removed since last year and why they were removed.
What files have been added since last year and why they were added

Thus, confirming that the remaining files have had no modifications.

This will enable BIM Managers to Manage.

Where manufactures specific content is supplied it would be useful to have a hyperlink to their web site in the text file or as a parameter within the family.
.

Click HERE to download the 7 page review of the Revit Structural Suite 2012 Out of the Box UK (formally Metric) Library Reference Guide with Files.

The seven page document covers what's new and what's missing since last year, but I can't give you any information about what might have been corrected or modified since last year, only Autodesk could and should do this.

What's New in Revit Architecture 2012 Videos

These Revit Architecture 2012 videos are live on YouTube, and show “What’s New” in 2012. A lot of these apply to Revit Structure and MEP

Uploaded by AutodeskBuilding on 12 Apr 2011 and Presented by Angela Chan who has quite a nice narrating voice that does not get on your nerves after watching eight videos.

Shortest video 0.42 minutes longest video 2.44 minutes well worth a watch enjoy……..

Improvements to DWGTM export functionality enable you to map Autodesk® Revit® Architecture categories and subcategories to layers in DWG files, giving you more control over layer naming. In addition, you can map Revit lines, patterns, and fonts to their DWG equivalents.

Visualization enhancements present you with more options for displaying your project. Users now have the ability to display edges with more realistic views and shadows in consistent colors mode. New semitransparent views help provide clarity in viewing elements within projects.

Point cloud tools in Autodesk® Revit® Architecture software connect laser scans directly into the Building Information Modeling process, helping to accelerate renovation and retrofit projects. By visualizing point clouds directly within the Revit software environment, it's easier to author an as-built model with more confidence and accuracy.

Revit Structure What’s New in 2012 Video’s are to follow shortly……and I will post a full list here for your continued enjoyment. Don’t forget that watching these kind of video can be put down on your CPD forms that you now need to complete and return to the IStructE annually.
