Autodesk Revit Product Support?

.
The Problem........ If you are going to have three versions of Revit then Support them equally

Even the half of the Support Menu is missing on the Structures Pages.
.
The Solution........ Simples!

Lots of the videos and features on the Architecture Support Page are equally applicable to RST and MEP, take the Architecture out of the title and the post the link to the video on All Support areas RAC, RST and MEP not just Architecture......

This is not rocket science ............... (Have you ever wondered what Rocket Scientist say it isn’t?)

Revit 2011 Introduces Certified Graphics Hardware List and Utility

---

Revit 2011 Introduces Certified Graphics Hardware List Autodesk products like Inventor have had this for a while. Many of the new features within Revit 2011 will rely on the compatibility of your graphics card.

When the product ships, there will be a list of certified graphic cards uploaded on the Autodesk web site somewhere. If Autodesk work to form, this will be available in the Architectural area before the Structural Area of their web. There is also going to be a new utility that you will be able to download and run on your computers to make sure you have a certified graphics card and driver.

Once the list and the utility are uploaded, and I find it, I will post a link on the blog.

If your graphics card is not supported you may (I suspect will) have to turn off Hardware Acceleration as a result, if you do then:-
  • Realistic Views will not show realistic materials (textures)
  • Ambient Occlusion the new 3D effect to create soft shadows effects will not appear even when enabled
  • Very slow performance of drawing Mechanical views due to hidden line generation.
  • Some artefacts will display on the screen that are not intended when displaying an underlay
  • Slower average performance of project
The not too old “acer” laptop that I used to Beta testing crashed bombing out of the program when I tried to zoom in or out on a view of a very simple four column single storey structure, until I turned off hardware acceleration, and even when I had turned it off lets say I experienced some strange and problematic visual problems with 3D views, which were attributed to my non certified graphics card with its latest driver.

The system requirements have really increased and having bought what was a mid to top end PC last year for home, it now appears that this will be a low end pc this year. Whilst you expect that a program like Revit will need a good specification machine Individuals and companies tend to replace computers on a three – five year cycle and I feel that Autodesk have kind of lost sight of that fact.

Autodesk seem to have added too much and too many fancy rendering bells and whistles to please the Architects without sorting out the basic like a text editor that can support subscript and superscript and fixing very basic drafting problems that have been reported and on the wish list for some time. You can’t please all of the people all of the time!

So basically it is essential that you check your graphics card before upgrading from 2010 to 2011.

On a 32 bit machine the switch for hardware acceleration is turned off by default.

Certain graphics cards and the 3GB switch can cause conflicts (it just gets better and better!) So you will need to turn these on in the options dialogue box if you want them enabled, but you will get a nice warning message that a crash could occur as a result.

Bottom line is this is a great update to Revit but it may come at a cost to your hardware budget in a time when many companies are not looking to invest in new hardware probably having an excess of PC’s due to the lay offs that nearly every company has had in the last 12-18 months.

This may result in a delay in rolling out 2011 at some companies, I know of one very large company that pays the subscription, has the software in the cupboard and is still running 2009 because of the cost of training on the new Ribbon in 2010.

As a CAD Manager, with AutoCAD it use to be the even versions that seemed to be more stable and got implemented, with Revit it looks like it’s the odd versions. So what are you going to do if you have the suite which gives you both products?

Answers on a postcard or perhaps make a comment below:-

Revit 2011 and things I can not say!

6:55 - Being covered by a couple of Non Disclosure Agreements as a Beta Tester and a Blogger I can say anything at the moment about Revit 2011

Whist others are letting the cats out of the bag and all round the town and even on YouTube! The Department of miss-information for Autodesk tells you one thing and then you read another on blogs and twitter. I asked about a launch date and was told they "don’t want to put that stake in the ground at the moment"!.

After the sham of a mockery of a travesty of a sham that was Service Pack 3 for 2010 I would rather see that stake “sanded and splinter free” before anyone puts it in the ground. but in the ground it's been placed.

Looks like I will be waiting for Service Pack One and the Hotfix to the bugs in that before rolling out 2011

Sham of a mockery of a travesty of a sham kind of describes the fragmented way the Beta, Blogger and Reseller are being co-ordinated to give a combine marketing push for Revit 2011.

16:15 just seen David Light has been given a green light to post about Whats New in Revit Architecture 2011

As I can't post about Revit here is a little something for Dave, The Architects Sketch.....

London Revit User Group - LRUG for short!

---
My field of dreams!
---
“Build it and they will come” Kevin Cosner was told in the film “Field of Dreams” well it's been some time happening but I created the UK Revit Register with the hope that it might promote some regional banding of individuals that may want to meet down the local public house or visit each others offices when they found out that they are not the only "Revit user in the village."
---
The UK Revit Register Group on linked-in was created to provide UK Revit users with a Discussion Area or Forum, somewhere where they can post News Items and the facility to advertise Jobs directly to Revit Users or Companies that use Revit. You can subscribe to a weekly or daily email re activity on the group, or follow a discussion.
---
It was a discussion thread in the Linked-In UK Revit Register Group which has spawned the LRUG ~ David Light (Revit) suggested on a discussion thread I had started about do we need a UK User Group? that If he managed to get a room and a projector and every body threw in five quid for a beer and pizza, how many people would actually turn up? The overall response from everybody was that it sounded like a bargain. But at the end of the day, we didn’t do the beer and pizza!.
---
Carl Collins of Arup Associates provided the venue, tea, coffee and biscuits and last night 26 Revit Users from companies based in London met up at ARUP’s offices for the inaugural meeting of LRUG. I gave an introduction to the group and a short presentation on known Revit Bugs, David gave a presentation on Revit Tips and Tricks and Carl on what he calls “the Geeky Stuff “Accurate Calculation of Embodied Carbon and Energy”
---
During a group discussion it was decided to keep the meetings small by limiting attendees to one representative from each company for a number or reasons.
---
As David says on his blog “The group plans to start smallish and hopefully grow into something which is sustainable….often these groups fall apart after a few meetings. But I (we) are keen that this group can grow and flourish. It has no secret agendas, it is trying to go back to grass roots; a group for users to share knowledge and learn from one another across all disciplines of Revit.”
---
Whist the meetings are to be limited to one person per company, as many users as you wish from a company may become members of the LRUG web site.

I would like to thank the Partners of Scott White and Hookins, for donating some web space and funding the LRUG web site.
---
The web site is a work in progress and as webmaster I’m still learning Joomla! so it’s a little rough around the edges at the moment. As I said to the members last night I’ve built them a playground (web site) with all the things I would like to see there, it’s up to them how they end up using it.
---
All the presentations will be available for download following the meetings and a forum area is provided for All, Architectural, Structural and MEP users.
---
Don’t forget, If you are based in London and wish to have access to the Members area of the LRUG web site to gain access to the forum and members’ area or to express a desire to attend a future meeting please email alan@cadalot.co.uk
---
Allan Brown informs me that that the Linked-In Glasgow Revit User Group called GRUG is to have its Inaugural Meeting on Tues 1st June 2010. If you are based in or around Glasgow email Allan Brown or Graham Stewart or use their facebook site
---
We have also become aware of a user group called BIM up North for northern UK users is in process of being formed as well. I will let you have more details as they become available.

The Contractors Guide to BIM Edition 1

---
The future of the design and construction industry is going to be driven by the use of technology. The best example emerging today is the use of three-dimensional, intelligent design information, commonly referred to as Building Information Modeling (BIM).

BIM is expected to drive the construction industry towards a “Model Based” process and gradually move the industry away from a “2D Based” process. This “Model Based” process where buildings will be built virtually before they get built out in the field is also referred to as Virtual Design and Construction (VDC).

This guide is for contractors who recognize this future is coming and are looking for a way to start preparing themselves so that when the future arrives, they will be ready.

This guide is intended to help contractors understand how to get started. download it here http://www.agcnebuilders.com/documents/BIMGuide.pdf

1958 A Classic Year, LEGO, Me and Rock 'n' Roll

After posting about "Maccano" I did a little digging and found out these interesting facts about LEGO, another childhood favourite.

In 1932 Ole Kirk Christiansen, master carpenter and joiner in the village of Billund, Denmark, sets up business. His firm manufactures stepladders, ironing boards - and wooden toys. In 1934 the company and its products now take on the name LEGO, which is formed from the Danish words "LEgGOdt" ("play well").

In 1947 the LEGO company is Denmark's first to buy a plastic injection-molding machine for making toys. In 1949 the company produces about 200 different plastic and wooden toys, including Automatic Binding Bricks, a forerunner of the LEGO bricks we know today.

They are sold only in Denmark. In 1955 after further developing the LEGO Bricks, the company launches the revolutionary "LEGO System of Play": 28 sets and 8 vehicles. It also sells supplementary elements.

In 1958 the current LEGO stud-and-tube coupling system is invented and patented. The new coupling principle makes models much more stable. The possible combinations of bricks run into astronomical figures.

Introduced in the United States in 1962, the first LEGOs came in loose sets of bricks.
By 1966, however, LEGO kits were guiding young hard hats in snapping together all kinds of buildings, trucks, planes, and ships. The LEGO Group expanded its audience with the 1969 addition of the DUPLO line of big bricks for preschoolers and, in 1977, the TECHNIC line of sophisticated projects for older kids and teens. Within the last decade, an active online community of LEGO fans has developed new designs and drawing programs in which new constructions can be recorded.

In 1998, LEGO introduced LEGO SCALA Planet, a kit specially designed for girls that combines the company's traditional construction elements with a family of dolls and fashion accessories, a magazine, and an interactive Web site. LEGO came to the United States during some of the coldest years of the Cold War, a period that also saw a heightened interest in education and toys that could teach. U.S. leaders exhorted schools to start turning out scientists and mathematicians, who were seen as key combatants in the arms and space races with the Soviet Union. In the spirit of the times, LEGO promised that its bricks would "develop the child's critical judgment, manual dexterity, and ability to think for himself." It’s no accident that the words "LEGO" and "imagination" often pop up together.

The bright, colorful plastic bricks can be joined in countless combinations and have been a favorite with kids, parents, and teachers since their introduction in 1958. Unlike Erector Sets and Tinkertoys, which appeal more to older children, LEGO bricks are loved by builders of all ages, even infants more interested in knocking down than in building.

Frank Hornby and Meccano we love you!

In recent times, Meccano's had lots of sad corporate changes involving big American companies and plastic pieces. It's now owned by a Japanese company who just get it. They're happy to acknowledge the classic metal kits produced solely in Meccano's Calais factory since 1959 and are selling replicas of the traditional set.

Englishman (Land of Hope and Glory playing in the background, visions of Tim Brooke-Taylor standing proud in his Union Jack waistcoat saluting) Frank Hornby named his invention 'Meccano' as a contraction of "make and know". He also invented Hornby trains and Dinky toys. I think Meccano was his finest moment.

Had it not been for Frank there are many young boys now in their 30's - 50's that would not have become Engineers and Architects!

Ummm..... finding out the power of triangles and bracing a structure so that it did not collapse and cut off the tip of your finger!. As a kid playing with tools like screwdrivers and spanners just like your Dad.

If you have young children, hide the Xbox and Wii and give them Meccano and Lego to play with.

The Death of Boxed Software from Autodesk

---
Reported on Bim and Beam and Inside the Factory

If a customer would prefer to receive their software upgrade via CD/DVD instead of via download, customers can set their delivery preference to “box” by signing in to Subscription Center and updating their profile prior to March 12, 2010. (Date does not apply to Media and Entertainment customers.)

That is so kind of them to give everyone three days notice!

After March 12, 2010 customers in countries affected by this policy change can still request a CD/DVD by submitting a request in Subscription Center and Autodesk will ship a CD/DVD at no additional cost. Software download gives Subscription customers immediate access to the latest Autodesk® software. It’s more convenient than installing upgrades from a CD or DVD. And, it’s a more sustainable choice. Autodesk will continue to ship CDs/DVDs to Subscription customers in some countries as the default delivery method. However, these customers will also have the option to download their Autodesk® software upgrades.

Additional information and a Customer FAQ can be found on the Subscription Software Download page. Or email subscription-team@autodesk.com.

Dimension Arrow Bug in exported dwg file after SP3

Here is a little BUG we have found in Revits Structure 2010 exported dwg files after SP3 has been installed.

Before Service Pack 3 was installed into Revit, when we exported or saved as a dwg file the arrows on the dimensions were set up the same in the dwg as the Revit model i.e. closed filled arrows.

Below is another dwg from the same model After Service Pack 3 was installed and the closed filled arrows translate as architectural ticks even though when inspected they think they are closed arrows!

And you can't seem to make them turn into closed arrows.

This has been checked out by our reseller and passed up to Autodesk who we are told have replicated the problem (March 2010).

UK CAD and BIM Construction Industry Recruitment

.
A few months ago I was contact by 2-3 Revit Draughtsmen / People / Technicians call them what you may, that had been or were about to be made redundant.

Recently I heard about a few Revit jobs being advertised through the grapevine, and I've posted them on this blog.

So I thought it might be useful to update the Recruitment postings to the blog such that they are easier to maintain in the future. Text editing and getting the posting to display on this thing is hard work!

In future if you search using the recruitment label you get a nice alphabetical listing of all the agencies and recruitment companies I'm aware of. If this resource helps one person who is out of work find employment then I will be happy.

Please email me with any additional companies that could be added to this list.

Revit Zone the Return!

After Ians posting on http://www.revitzone.com/ confirming that development of the Revit Zone website had now finished. But fret not, lots of new Revit goodness was on it's way to their new site at revit.biz

He has been getting quite a few emails over the last week asking why he is rebranding the site to revit.biz.

The only answer he can give to that is because it seemed a cool name!. But there seems to be a concensus that (from the emails he has received), people generally like the name Revit Zone and had got used to it. And as he is one for feedback, he has listened and decided to change the name back- but keep the new look site! (If that's OK with us?!).

If nothing else, he sincerely hopes we like the look of the new site and find it a bit easier than the old Revit Zone, in terms of navigation.

Got to be said I like the new format, except you can't link to an individual posting!

Revit Jobs ~ 8 week contract in Leeds City Centre

---
I've just been notified by Rob Clark of Cadassist, of an 8 week contract up for grabs in Leeds city centre for experienced Revit technicians.

If you know of anybody who might be interested, please ask them to get in touch with Richard Robinson (richard@calibresearch.co.uk)

Rob is not recruitment agent, just a Technician looking out for other Technician during hard times...

Rob has not asked me to plug his company, but as he is a decent human being who is trying to help fellow Technicians, I'm going too anyway.

Visit Cadassist, Number 1 Autodesk Training Centre (ATC) in Northern Europe, for the THIRD year running (I did not know that until I read the signature at the bootom of his email!)

Contact Rob Clark - Trainer & Applications Engineer robert.clark@cadassist.co.uk Telephone No 0161 440 8122

Cadassist have an airline style booking system, the earlier you book the cheaper it is. Some courses in vertical applications are even cheaper, hence the starting from £49 claim on their web site.
