Errors Installing Revit Structure 2013 and Design Review

As I'm having a lazy Bank Holiday I thought I would have a look to see if Revit Structure Suite 2013 had made the subscription centre, and it had, so with due diligence I downloaded the files and installed....

Within the first ten minutes of the install I had two error messages

The first was this

I had a look at the file it was having problems with, it's there and a day later than all the others in the directory, but appears corrupted as I can't obtain properties, preview or open with infranview dispite just being a graphic file.

OK it Design Review and Not Revit so after Ignoring as Retry didn't work we moved on about two minutes then I got the next error message.

I have no idea what WhipFilter.dll is or what does but it has not registered and it's suggested I contact my support personnel !

OK I'm at home it's a weekend, I will ask my IT support guy next wednesday when I see him, or perhaps just download design review and install again

Finally I get this screen

I've apparently successfully  installed everything...... Umm it seems to have missed the two error messages for Design Review that its' presented and the advice to contact my support person.

So if you're out there, and you are having the same problem, you are not on your own ;0)

If and when I find out what WhipFilter.dll is and what is not going to happen as a result, and what the missing png file affect I will let you know. If I don't just un-install and re-install after downloading Design Review 2013 on it's own.

One year, just one year to would be so good for Autodesk software to install with no problems..... I can dream can't I?

The install, including errors took just under an hour after I had downloaded the files which I didn't bother to time, as I said it's a lazy bank holiday, I just set them to download and enjoyed the sun in the garden.

UPDATE

I un-installed Design Review 2013 when to the Autodesk web site to re-install and get the following error message when I try to install

After multiple tries of checking my internet connection it still will not install

Now trying to download the setupDesignReview2013.msi.zip file from here and reading the Installation Guide , it appears I'm not on my own and this suggestion has come from the Autodesk discussion groups.

I had trouble downloading the setupDesignReview2013.exe, I don't think my virus protection software liked it, but I did manage to download the msi.zip unpacked it and installed a working copy of Design Review 2013 without any bugs..... Yippppppeeeeeee

AutoDesk have uploaded some Revit 2013 Videos. There are a couple without and description and they have lost the RAC RST and MEP identifyer, I assume due to One Box being released. However these acronyms assist Revit Users in quickly identifying who the feature will directly benefit. In the listing below I have added some information about that to assist you.

As with last year the big winners with new and enhanced features are the MEP guys, followed by Architecture and last as normal are Structural Enhancements - RC detailing in Revit is nothing more than a glorified toy, you still could not detail and schedule to UK and Eurocodes using it.

Structural Feature:- Area and Path Reinforcement has been updated with new behaviour that makes these elements containers for hosting Structural Rebar.

Analytical Links in Autodesk Revit 2013

Structural Feature:- In all places where automatic Rigid Links would previously have been generated, now new Analytical Link elements are generated. Now analytical Links can be created manually in the Analytical Adjust mode in places where you need them. The placement editor allows you to select 2 nodes between which a new analytical link will be created.

Enhanced Analytical Model in Autodesk Revit 2013

Structural Feature:- In Autodesk Revit 2013, you have greater control over the analytical model. Analytical floors and analytical foundation slabs now have corner analytical nodes in Analytical Edit mode which allow direct manipulation of the analytical model. A new openings editor enables you to indicate openings to be ignored in analytical floors, analytical foundation slabs, and walls.

Improved Snapping to Fillets and Hooks in Autodesk Revit 2013

Structural Feature:- Fillet and Hook references have been improved and now they let you define a rebar or rebar set in the appropriate position within a fillet or hook. By snapping to these references you can avoid interferences and collisions with other rebar. After modifying properties of rebars or reinforced elements snapping to the references is preserved and adjusted to modified settings

Revit 2013 Room Calculation Point

MEP Feature:- Improve space and zone calculations as a foundation for energy analysis by placing a family calculation point inside a space to help ensure that the family is included in the calculation data. Use results to help inform design decisions to better predict the performance of the systems.

Revit 2013 Reapply Type

MEP engineers can design ducts to meet with ASHRAE standards by using built in tables that are accessible during design.

Revit 2013 Pressure Loss Report

MEP Feature:-  Design and document more efficient building systems and improve performance with more accurate reporting. New Pressure Loss Reports can be generated for a single duct or pipe system or multiple systems. MEP engineers can set up your report in a number of ways that includes whether or not to show the critical path used, etc. The report format can be saved for use later and obsolete reports can be deleted.

Revit 2013 Pipe Routing Preferences

MEP engineers can access Routing Preferences to design pipe systems to help meet industry standards. Real-world materials can then be applied to pipe and pipe fitting sizes to help drive calculations necessary to determine pipe size to support required flow.

Revit 2013 - Duct / Pipe Calculations with Taps

MEP Feature:- Design duct and pipe systems with greater accuracy with tools for calculating flow and pressure loss. Flow and pressure is now calculated separately for each sub-segment of a duct or pipe run when using taps instead of tee fittings to streamline the process. Calculated results can be viewed using the system inspector on duct and pipe runs. You can see the pressure loss and flow data for each sub-segment between duct and pipe branches that use tap fittings.

New Component-based stairs in Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013 provide capabilities to assemble a stair using individual run, landing, and support components. Each run and landing component can be modified by using direct manipulation controls. During the creation process, you can preview the stair in 3D as you sketch the various components. Component-based stairs allow overlapping stairs to be created, as well as more stair layouts including spiral stair cases and winder stairs. Additionally, you can create multiple runs and have Autodesk Revit automatically create landings to connect the runs

Every year this happens........

I posted this at 10:25 ish in the morning ..........Back from site and it's just gone 4:00 p.m. ish and it looks like ASAP has not happened yet ;0)

Revit 2013 Family Structure & Content

Hi Blog Readers

No I've not dropped off the universe, just been very busy with family issues as my wife Jennifer was taken into hospital and for a short period was in intensive care. Combine that with work and organising and administration of the LRUG http://www.lrug.co.uk/ March meeting, then editing videos and creating material from the presentation to upload to the LRUG members’ area of the web site there Isn’t very much time for other interests or blogging.

Thankfully we now have Jen home with us again, complete with cylinders of oxygen etc. but she is still with us and hopefully on the road to recovery.

What can I say about RST 2013……

OK as previous years I have been beta testing, but no Bloggers event this year, shame I missed killing the penguins. In reality I would not have had time for it with everything that has been going on.  

The same stupid prat that let the cat out of the bag early last year (who some see as a Revit Evangelist) has done the same this year. I saw a linked-in notification of his posting and was not surprised who it was when I went there to read it.

David Light a fellow founder of LRUG has done his usual excellent review, (Click Here to read) and as the NDA is over I can now Blog legitimately.   

From my point of view, I’m underwhelmed with the lack of development, as I have been the last couple of years. The 2010 and 2011 version saw major advances with the product and real additions halfway during the Autodesk product year at Subscription Advantage Release.

I understand that for most of the world there has been a recession, however looking at press releases about Autodesk profits recently, they need not only to squeeze every ounce of monies out of large corporate companies but to actually use that money in developing the products to give us real tangible benefits.

We are still waiting for many items that have been on the users “Need List” not “Want List” (and there is a distinct difference) for many years now. One prime example that comes up every year is Subscript and Superscript in the text editor. It’s basic and fundamental, and still missing within the Revit 2013 text editor.

OK off soapbox and to some stuff I can share.

Many moons ago, when I was younger, so much younger than today, (sorry I had a Beatles moment) in January 2008 I produced my first Revit Libraries Reference Guide and Autodesk used it to make modification to all the typographical errors and misspellings in the 2010 release the following year.

And it’s since then I have produced a review annually so Click Here for the Revit Structure version for 2013

Best thing I can say is download and read it, some stuff has been moved around and renamed so much I’ve included diagrams like the one below just to sort it out in my own mind.

Erik says that these flying robots have been making the rounds for a while, well I had missed them until his posting , I think that apart from those in BIM liking cutting edge stuff, when you see how they can map a building now that's impressive - why do I feel like we aren't taking notice of Terminator and I was looking for a Skynet logo in the background somewhere.

Highlights of the findings include:
/78% agree the BIM is the future of project information, though how that future will look is uncertain, with 4 out of five agreeing that the industry is not yet clear enough of what BIM actually is

Almost a third (31%) of construction professionals are now using BIM – up from 13% in 2010

New UK Blog - Revit Sticky Notes

There is a new UK Blog that has recently come to my attention, Its called Revit Sticky Notes (I like the idea behind the name) and it has been up since November 2011. In addition the Author has released some plugin's for Revit.

The Authors name is Rahul Shah and he is currently an Associate/Studio Design Technology Manager at Woods Bagot London studio. He also happens to be a fellow member of LRUG (London Revit User Group) http://www.lrug.co.uk/

Current Plugins on his blog include:-

BIM and Beam - Three Buses in a Row ;0)

It may be pure coincidence, however since my posting on the 31st January about the lack of effort and posting over at BIM and Beam since Wai Chu moved on from Autodesk from the five nominated Authors (The Famous Five), postings on BIM & Beam are now like London Buses. Nothing for ages then three all come along at once (usually one after the other and not side by side as the picture above).

Squeezed out into the blogger-sphere just after my posting and before midnight on the same day, actually making it two posts in January is  Autodesk ForceEffect Version 2.0 Now Available!

This posting is about a free app available for Apple iPad and iPhone from the iTunes App Store that allows engineers including structural engineers to model and simulate concepts. Real time solving capabilities provide immediate feedback on the performance of a design, enabling you to bring engineering to the point of the problem.

No Author credited for this posting which is a real shame because you don’t get to see which of the famous five suddenly burst into life. Nice posting, actually had something to do with structural engineering.

Two postings ON THE SAME DAY – Bly me!  

The first posting is about  Operating Systems support change for Autodesk products Reporting that there has been an important change to the way Autodesk are support Operating Systems for Autodesk products.  This change directly impacts the Revit family of solutions.  Please see the following link for the change and important details Microsoft Windows Vista Support FAQ, it says

Then as if to answer the question Pawel Piechnik posts  New structural content for Revit Structure is available straight after on the same day.

It appears Autodesk (Pawel) thinks that they have just uploaded some new country specific, structural .rfa content and templates in the Subscription Centre for you to download.

The delivery includes content for Brazil, Russia and Spain Yipppppeeee for them

However it looks like Pawel may have jumped the gun with his posting because three readers have reported that they can not find the material on the Subscription Centre and are requesting a hyperlink!

OK, ok, I know we asked for some action and more postings on your blog, but you could have scheduled the posting for a couple of days in the future, to make it look like you are continually active on our behalf, or at least ensured the material was actually there before you told the world about it......

I know we the User and never happy :0(   The Headmaster now says  "6/10 Better". Now a plug for things UK based ;0)

Autodesk have asked for feedback about what’s missing out of the box for the UK users, so unless you actually helped Paul Oakley gather feedback for Autodesk – don’t complain if when a similar package arrives for the UK it does not have in it what you would like.

ANZRS v3 now available!

Its only 6 months ago that ANZRS the Australian and New Zealand Revit Standard Version 2 was released, changes to ANZRS are not expected to be frequent, as the ANZRS Committee understand the effort required to adapt to new standards and practices.  However, they wish to always keep the feedback gates open, and it is feedback from those who have contributed so far that they understand more of how ANZRS can be even better!

The ANZRS committee have kept significant changes to a minimum, as promised, but have worked hard to take all your feedback into consideration and to present a new pack that would be easier to navigate, more helpful and hopefully more practical to implement – to whatever extent you wish to.
