Revit Zone the Return!

After Ians posting on http://www.revitzone.com/ confirming that development of the Revit Zone website had now finished. But fret not, lots of new Revit goodness was on it's way to their new site at revit.biz

He has been getting quite a few emails over the last week asking why he is rebranding the site to revit.biz.

The only answer he can give to that is because it seemed a cool name!. But there seems to be a concensus that (from the emails he has received), people generally like the name Revit Zone and had got used to it. And as he is one for feedback, he has listened and decided to change the name back- but keep the new look site! (If that's OK with us?!).

If nothing else, he sincerely hopes we like the look of the new site and find it a bit easier than the old Revit Zone, in terms of navigation.

Got to be said I like the new format, except you can't link to an individual posting!

RST2010 - Metric Library Reference Guide

Revit Structural Suite 2010 Out of the Box Metric Library Reference Guide as installed in the UK. I originally created this document back in 2007 for version 2008 and catalogued all the typos and spelling errors in the Metric Library and sent it to Autodesk so that they could make the corrections for version 2009.

Autodesk have traditionally been very poor at documenting what exactly should be in the (metric) library. I’m hoping they are going to improve in the future (OK I’m an eternal optimist! ;0)
Recently in the service packs you get a ~Newfilelist~.ini that gives you some information about what has been added and a backup of what has been removed. However I firmly believe that each folder should have a readme,txt file that gives:-

Name of the folder
# Files Deleted ~ (with a full listing with some explanation of why they have been removed)# New files added ~ (complete listing)# Files Modified ~ ( with a full listing with some explination as to what has been modified and why?)# Files updated ~ (Those that are exactly as in the previous release but have just been upgraded to the current format)
Where Manufactures specific content is supplied it would be useful to have the manufacturers name and or product or trade name as part of the family file name

Hyperlinks to Manufacturers web sites would also be extremely useful. This information should be embedded with the family.

---Below is series of FREE CADclip 'Lab Exercises' on how to model and document the drawings for a double car garage. This is a great training aid / resource for anyone who is teaching REVIT or learning to use REVIT (Architecture or Structure).

Remember, these are 'Lab Exercises' and not a Tutorial. They are best utilized after getting familiar with REVIT. For more detail tutorials visit CADclips.

The Lab Exercises start with grid lines and levels, then walls, doors, windows, footings and a roof. Then a sloping slab and notched foundation wall at the overhead door. Then we put the plans, elevations, section on a sheet and annotate them for documentation. The we will create Schedules and Material Takeoffs that include Totals and Costs.

We also constrain and align the walls, grids, roof and slab to establish a nice neat parametric project.

Move a grid line and the entire project updates right down to the sheets, schedules and costs.

CADClip Video on Wood Framing Walls Extension

Daryl Gregoire over at Revit Rocks! saw my posting about the Wood Framing Wall Extension available for free to all REVIT subscription members.

It took him a solid 15-20 hours of tinkering before he could get it to create what he wanted in a single attempt, however there were MANY failed attempts.

I feel really responsible for the solid 15-20 hours of tinkering Daryl and hope you’re not in the dog house with your wife?

He suggests in his video that there are a few things that need to get 'fixed' with this REVIT extension before it's 100% ready for the market but it has amazing potential.

He went from being excited to being disappointed no less than 5 times but is back to being excited again . . .(Glad to hear that Daryl)

What is 4D, 5D & 6D BIM?

The acronym “BIM” is historically linked in the minds of many to 3-Dimensional or three spatial dimensional virtual modelling of buildings, however recently I’ve been seeing blog postings for 4D, 5D and even 6D BIM, so I decided to investigate.

To me being a Science Fiction nut, I’m happier with the 4th Dimension being Time

Until now I always thought the 5th Dimension was a multiple Grammy-winning American popular music vocal group best-known during the late 1960s and early 1970s for popularizing the hits "Up, Up and Away” and "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In".

Or

The 5th Dimension is a mathematical construct

Or

The 5th Dimension is a hypothetical extra dimension beyond the usual three spatial dimensions and one time dimension of Relativity. But that’s far too deep..........

4D BIM is a 3D BIM that has objects and assemblies that have "schedule and time" constraint data added to them. The information can be contained in the BIM or can be linked or otherwise associated (integrated and/or operable) with project design and construction activity scheduling and time sensitivity estimating and analysis systems.

5D BIM is a 4D BIM that has objects and assemblies that have a "cost" dimension added to them. The cost information can be contained in the BIM or can be linked or otherwise associated to the building objects.

The publication An Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM) by ASHRAE has these reversed.

Recently I’ve seen 6D BIM referred too, this appears to be Life Cycle Management.

So in Summary:-

2D - Something with 2 dimensions (flat)

3D - Something seen in 3 dimensions e.g. width, length and height.

4D - Adding the aspect of Time to a project (phasing/sequencing)

5D - Adding the aspect of Cost to a project (cost estimating)

6D - The aspect of Life Cycle Management (owner/FM)

Revit Structure 2010 Quick Reference Guide

Being an old AutoCAD User and recalling the old six page cardboard Quick Reference Guides that use to be provided with the software. I decided to try and create a Quick Reference Guide for Revit Structure 2010 to assist new users at our offices in Bedford, London and Winchester.

Unfortunately because I’ve used a font size for the visually impaired (also known as the over 40’s) it’s grown to 11 pages long.

As you know when I’ve posted this kind of material on the blog in the past, I’ve had to do it as a series of jpg's which can be a real pain for me to upload and for those interested in obtaining to harvest from the blog. The quality is also not as good as an Adobe file.

Autodesk is looking for customers in Boston, Toronto or Portland (Oregon) to participate in a focus group or site visit on improving its products. Products are general... AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit but other products as well.

The research will be conducted in late January/early February in a downtown hotel in each city at approximately 6:30pm – 8pm on a weekday evening.

Customer visits will be conducted in the day time and will last approximately 1 hour.

If you’re interested in participating and helping us improve Autodesk software let us know by completing this form.

Apart from the occasional Victor Meldrew moment, I occasionally like to share information or post about useful software I’ve found to assist me in my day to day non-CAD or BIM activities, so this posting is slightly off BIM and Revit.

The other hats I wear during the day are Structural Engineer, Party Wall Surveyor and CDM-C.

Now when I’m undertaking these roles, I have cause to produce Inspection / Engineers Reports, Site Appraisals and Condition Surveys.

These usually mean taking a large number of photographs and commenting about them within the report. Now depending on the amount of defects found and recorded/photographed the Condition Surveys can consist of a schedule that points to a vast quantity of numbered photographs, or if not too may defects or problems are found then it’s nice to load the photographs on one side of the page and describe the observed defects next to the photograph in Word.

Needles to say this can be prove to be extremely time consuming and ultimately expensive for the client, so I’m always looking for ways to process this information more quickly.

I recently found, Contenta-images2pdf, which is a simple and powerful tool to create PDF photo albums. It is simple to use because of its intuitive interface that gives you control over what you are doing. It is also powerful because you can configure important settings and automate common tasks.

In two sentences, here is how the software works:-

First, select which photos you will add to the album.

Then configure how you want the album to look like. That's all there is to do!

You have very easy control over how many photographs per page are printed

A few things to note, The Amazon Video On Demand options for purchase and Rental are not available in the UK and a Video Playback Not Authorized message is presented stating that:-

“We have detected that you are not located within the US. Due to licencing restrictions Amazon Video On Demand customers must be located in the United States when viewing videos online”

Which is a real shame if you are not in the US and don’t want to wait for the DVD to arrive or wanted to choose the Rent the Videos option presented.
